Marriott Amex Offer: Spend $500, Get $100 at Canadian Hotels

We’re seeing a new Amex Offer for Marriott hotels nationwide that allows you to earn a $100 statement credit upon spending $500 on Marriott hotel stays within Canada until December 31, 2022.

Marriott Hotels in Canada: Spend $500, Get $100

The new Marriott Amex Offer requires manual registration before they will apply on your card.

You’ll get a $100 statement credit upon making a $500 purchase at a Marriott property in Canada.

If you were to make a purchase of exactly $500, you’d effectively unlock a 20% discount on your purchase via the $100 statement credit.

This offer has a registration cap of 40,000 cardholders, so be sure to log in to your Amex online dashboard to register now so you don’t miss out.

The offer has shown up on a wide range of American Express products, like the Platinum Card and Aeroplan Reserve Card. Somewhat frustratingly, it’s not necessarily going to show up on your Marriott Bonvoy Card or Marriott Bonvoy Business Card (which would otherwise provide the highest earning rate on Marriott purchases).

Because the credit is applied on the Amex side, the discount will kick in based on the final amount charged by the Marriott hotel. That means you can combine it with other location-specific deals or money-saving tactics – as long as the bill is at least $500, you’ll get the $100 credit.

The Amex Offer is valid until December 31, 2022. As usual, this refers to the transaction date of your hotel stay, so any hotel stay that ends by that date (excluding prepaid stays) should work.

The Fine Print

The most relevant part of the terms and conditions is as follows:

Offer valid only at participating Marriott Bonvoy™ properties in Canada. Reservations must be made online at www.marriott.com, via the Marriott Bonvoy™ App or by calling 1-888-236-2427. Click here for a list of participating properties. Offer only valid on room rate and room charges. Online gift card purchases are excluded. All other purchases are excluded. Offer not valid for lodging stays that are paid for before registration of your eligible Card in the offer or after 31/12/2022. Excludes EDITION®, The Luxury Collection®, Bulgari®, Marriott Vacation Club®, Design Hotels™, Gaylord Hotels®, Protea Hotels®, AC Hotels by Marriott®, Moxy® Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott International™, Marriott Executive Apartments®, and Vistana™

As you can see, there’s quite a number of excluded brands, although their collective footprint in Canada is quite limited. But it’s something to take note of in case you were considering staying at, say, the AC Hotel Montreal Downtown.

While the terms say that the offer applies to the “room rate and room charges only”, historically these Marriott offers have also worked with general-purpose Marriott gift cards purchased from a hotel’s front desk, as the purchases are not differentiated from regular hotel room and incidental charges.

Therefore, even if you don’t plan on staying at enough Marriott hotels in Canada this summer and fall to maximize your statement credits, you can nevertheless show up to a local Marriott property that sells gift cards and unlock an effective discount on future Marriott stays.

For those of you who play the game in two-player mode or more, note that most Marriott hotels require that you pay with a credit card that’s in your own name.

I had run afoul of this at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver a while back, when I tried to split $1,000+ in gift card purchases across multiple individuals’ cards; the hotel had even swiped one of the cards that wasn’t in my name before asking that the purchase be refunded (although the statement credit still remained on the account).

Enhancing Your Stay with Marriott STARS and Luminous

If you don’t have Marriott Bonvoy elite status, or even if you do but you wish to further elevate your stay, booking with Prince of Travel through Marriott STARS or Luminous would entitle you to additional benefits for no additional cost.

Luxury hotels like the St. Regis Toronto, The Ritz-Carlton Toronto, and The Ritz-Carlton Montreal can be booked via Marriott STARS. Meanwhile, a wider range of properties, including The DOUGLAS Vancouver and the W Montreal, can be booked via Marriott Luminous.

The Marriott STARS or Luminous rates are the same as the best available flexible rate, which can be higher than prepaid rates, member rates, corporate rates, etc. that you may also have access to.

In this case, you’ll want to weigh up the savings on those rates and how much you value the benefits of booking through STARS or Luminous. Either way, you can take advantage of the current Amex Offer to get $100 off your stay(s) of $500+.

Scotia Gold Amex Cardholders Can Register Too

As we’ve seen on previous Amex Offers, the “Spend $500, Get $100” Marriott offer is also available for Scotiabank American Express cardholders to register via this link.

This option is available to primary and supplementary cardholders of the Scotiabank American Express Card, Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, and Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card.

This gives you yet another option to multiply your savings under this promotion, especially as Scotiabank-issued Amex cards can be manually registered individually for the offer, whereas Amex-issued Amex cards cannot.

Conclusion

American Express is now rolling out a new set of $100 statement credits on Marriott hotel stays of $500+ in Canada.

All current cardholders should see at least one of these offers on their accounts, as long as you’ve held your card for a few weeks and have started seeing Amex Offers roll in.

Don’t forget to register on your Amex Offers dashboard before the maximum number of registrations is hit, and then start planning your Marriott hotel stays (or gift card purchases) before December 31, 2022.
